Coffee for the Healthy Heart

Coffee might be an energizer in the morning or a good drink to share with a friend during lazy afternoons, but do you know that it’s also healthy for the heart?

Before you speak of concerns about palpitations and other side effects in consuming coffee, let’s assess what the experts say about how drinking coffee affects our cardiovascular health.

A study entitled “Light-to-moderate coffee drinking associated with health benefits” in Hungary revealed that coffee indeed has positive effects on cardiovascular health.

"To our knowledge, this is the largest study to systematically assess the cardiovascular effects of regular coffee consumption in a population without diagnosed heart disease," said study author Dr. Judit Simon, of the Heart and Vascular Centre, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary, and the lead author of the said study in a report by the European Society of Cardiology.

If you’re a regular coffee drinker because it’s part of your lifestyle then all along without you knowing, you have already been taking care of your cardiovascular health while enjoying the experience at the same time. If you’re interested in learning about the health benefits of drinking coffee on the cardiovascular system then you’re in for an opportunity to learn all about it.

Coffee on cardiovascular health

The study included 30, 650 participants who have undergone cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess their cardiac structure and function. The researchers assessed the association between consuming coffee daily and the heart structure and function for about 11 years.

After the time frame of the study, the researchers found out that light-to-moderate consumption is associated with a 17% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 21% lower risk of incident stroke.

"The imaging analysis indicated that compared with participants who did not drink coffee regularly, daily consumers had healthier sized and better functioning hearts. This was consistent with reversing the detrimental effects of aging on the heart," Dr. Simon said.

How much coffee is enough?

For a healthy heart, the study stated that one could consume 0.5 to 3 cups of coffee per day for a healthier heart. Many would speculate that it might cause adverse effects such as palpitation that may complicate the heart, but the study states otherwise.

"Our results suggest that regular coffee consumption is safe, as even high daily intake was not associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality after a follow-up of 10 to 15 years," Dr. Simon continued. "Moreover, 0.5 to 3 cups of coffee per day was independently associated with lower risks of stroke, death from cardiovascular disease, and death from any cause."

Drink coffee for the heart

As the adage goes: “everything in moderation is good.”

The number of coffee cups you could drink per day should be in moderation depending on your health and your lifestyle. Taking care of your health should also be in moderation. Practice moderation in coffee consumption, exercise, diet, and sleep. If you do all these then you will surely have a healthier heart.
