Our Global Project Our partners in need
The small, family farmers in the Mt. Meru region of Tanzania were insufficiently paid for their premium coffee beans, creating a cycle of poverty, poor health, lack of education and substandard quality of life. For the past 25 years, the Mt. Meru Coffee Project of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has been paying these farmers a fair trade price for their beans, importing and roasting, and selling the premium coffee through congregations and online customers.

FARMER TRAINING FUND
Growing great tasting coffee requires hard work along with cultivating and processing knowledge. The Tanzania Coffee Research Institute (TaCRI) has partnered with the Mt. Meru Coffee Project for several years to provide hands on training for our coffee growing farmers. Improved quality and quantities have resulted.
Our Partner’s Need
While the training provided by TaCRI is free, the Mt. Meru Coffee Project has provided funds to cover the costs of meals and transportation for the farmers during the three day training program. Costs are roughly $70/person, with a goal of sending 100-120 farmers annually. Contributions have played a big part in helping us offset the costs.
